You’re working on your birthday?
Yeah, but it’s good.

You couldn’t go home this time, but how important is it for you to be with your loved ones on your birthday? Are you the sort of person to whom it’s like any other day, even if you have to work? Or would you like to take the day off, celebrate?
I think I am where I need to be, and I’m with my sisters – they’ve come down from London – so I’m happy! And I’m where I should be; I’m working, and this is where I want to be.

Do you feel a year older? You’ve always been mature and quite a grown up
I think it feels the same. Every year, you sort of reflect on what has happened, you kind of make resolutions, you have targets and dreams and things you hope for, for the next year. I’ve had a wonderful, wonderful time this year. I’m very happy with the work I’m doing now, and I’m satisfied. So really, you just keep looking forward to doing better work and, umm, and then of course, there’s a life beyond films; you want to keep growing as a person, and be doing the best you can.

Do you have any plans today, after shoot?
I don’t know, let’s see. I think the producer is taking us all out for dinner.

What category of birthday girl are you? Do you like to bring it in with a loud, wild party or do you prefer a quiet celebration?
It depends. I think what’s meant to happen, happens. You know, it’s that kind of a thing you don’t plan. We are shooting tomorrow as well, so I don’t think it will be that late at night, but let’s see...

Is a birthday for you also a time to introspect – what you’ve done for a whole year? Do you like to sit back and look at your life as an observer?
Yes I do, but I don’t think you can ever completely, unbiased-ly look at your life, because you’re the one who’s in it, and you’re living it. But you just need to try and know that you’re doing the best that you can, and I think it’s also important to try and correct yourself. It’s not that you should always think that everything you’re doing is right, you should try and see where you can do better, and be better, and you need to think positively, and think about the things you want in life. If you are positive, and you picture what you want, then that’s what comes to you.

Our source said, “Karan and Aamir were hardly acquaintances till very recently. And they have now become close friends. After Karan made his appearances at Aamir’s party for Gustavo and attended the music release of Peepli Live, things are clearer by the minute. Now Karan has invited Aamir to this party.”

Apparently, Karan telephoned Aamir personally to invite him to the party. Aamir, who is known to be inaccessible to the rest of the world as he rarely carries his mobile phone himself, accepted Karan’s invitation graciously and promised him that he would attend his party.

But Karan’s is a get-together for the cast and crew of I Hate Luv Storys, hence Aamir as a guest is obviously misplaced. But Aamir’s not one who goes back on his word. He will attend the party which will be held at a suburban five star hotel.”

Barely hours after Spain won the World Cup Anil Kapoor was fatigued and yet euphoric in Johannesburg. He had seen what he called the greatest show on earth and met the man who made it possible.

Being the brand ambassador to South Africa, Anil had a ringside view of the match. And he’s most impressed. “You have to understand the World Cup final was a selfcontained experience. And the way the South African government put it together is exemplary for all, including us Indians who struggle against countless glitches when we host an international sporting event. On Sunday evening here in Johannesburg there were no glitches, no traffic jams on the roads, no seating errors, no jostling and no VIP interventions. Everything went smoothly. I’d describe it as the greatest show on earth.”

Anil was bowled over by Shakira. “What a presence! What a performance! She just took everyone’s collective breath away and set the right mood for the match.” The match itself was touch and go, and Anil was hooked. “The final moments proved decisive for Spain. I realized what edge-of-the-seat excitement meant. I forgot everything in the final moments of the game including the fact that I had flown in and had to fly out within 24 hours. It was just 96,000 people staring open-mouthed in a stadium built specially for the occasion.”

Anil ran into some of his colleagues from Bollywood at the stadium. “It was great meeting Shah Rukh and Gauri, though they sat in a different area from me. What I really enjoyed was meeting Shah Rukh’s son Aryan for the first time. What a bright, goodlooking boy. He sure is a chip off the old block.”

But the greatest most moving moment of the match was when Nelson Mandela arrived. Anil chokes with emotion, “I first met Mandela for my film Gandhi My Father. But I can never get over my awe and admiration for the man. The elaborate and elegant way he arrived for the match just bowled me over. Because of his grand-daughter’s accident Mandela had not come for any of the other matches. But he made it a point to come for this one because his country hosting something so spectacular was matter of great pride for him. I just kept looking at him wondering how vindicated Mandela must be feeling to see a country he had brought to freedom, celebrating its freedom with such a wonderful event.”

On Monday, Anil was getting ready to return to Mumbai. “I’ve to be back to carry on with the marketing of my daughter’s film. I can’t wait to see its release on August 6. After that, I’m taking a month-long holiday in LA. I think I’ve earned myself a break.”

But Bollywood’s smart new style icon is a great shopping companion too, for someone in Delhi. If you get her started on the subject of shopping in the capital, she can’t stop! Jewellery from Chandni Chowk, chiffon from Sarojini, accessories from Janpath – the Aisha star is clear that when it comes to shopping, there’s no place like Delhi!

Sonam style
Ask anyone in tinsel town or even outside it who the best dressed among the younger actors is. The overwhelming majority probably will – and many have – voted for Sonam in the recent past. “Oh, I don’t know about the style icon image – I’ve always loved clothes,” says Sonam, a tad self-conscious. “The style icon tag is a little embarrassing, actually. It’s really just an expression of your individuality. Like in Delhi, the design fraternity is so dominant... I really believe designers are artistes. It takes an artiste to cut a suit correctly. It’s my hobby to collect old clothes. If you’re comfortable in your skin, style comes automatically. I mean... I can’t explain it – I’d be cool in even a kurta and jeans.”

And has she done any rasta-chhaap shopping? “Oh, you find the best clothes in Janpath! I’ve shopped in Chandni Chowk, I’ve found the best jewellery there, and bindis, shoes, the best kapda. It’s my passion. You have to just really enjoy it. Some of the best dressed people I’ve seen are college girls in Delhi, they’ll buy kapda and get those surplus branded clothes and just make their own stuff. I’ve been to Sarojini, of course, I got kapda for my salwar kameez from there.” For a film outfit? “Not for a film yaar, for me! You get the best chiffon there, the French chiffon, the Maharani Gayatri Devi wala, wahin se milta hai. There’s no place like Delhi for shopping... uff, I could go on and on. The best embroidery you get here, the best gota. In GK, you know na, you get the surplus clothes from international brands...” says Sonam, sounding quite excited. This is one ride that this clotheshorse clearly can’t get enough of!

Pankaj uncle’s pet
Sonam was in Scotland when we spoke to her, wrapping up a shoot for Pankaj Kapur’s Mausam with Shahid. How’s the mausam there? “Oh, the weather here is lovely right now. Summer in Scotland is very beautiful. It has an old world charm, and I’m fascinated by that,” she says. But she’s bound not to say much on the movie itself. “Mausam is a classic love story written by Pankaj Kapur, it stars Shahid and me, and that’s all I can tell you right now,” she laughs apologetically.

She’s working for the first time with Shahid – how’s it going? She reminds you that she’s worked ‘for the first time’ with all her co-stars so far. “Shahid is wonderful, he’s very, very nice, very kind, sweet, gentle...” And Kapur Sr – is he as strict with the unit as reports say he is? “He’s not at all strict with me, and Shahid is always super annoyed because he feels that Pankaj uncle is completely biased towards me. I could get away with murder on the sets!” she laughs.

Imran Khan, with whom she’s done I Hate Luv Storys, has said that he’d really wanted to work with her, and that they both get along pretty well. Correct? “Yeah, Imran and I have great chemistry. Even off-screen, we share a great equation, and I think that’s translated on screen. We’re complete opposites in real life and we’re always ribbing each other, joking... I have good chemistry with both Ranbir and Imran,” she says. Imran, in fact, used the word ‘chill’ for her – “there’s never any stress working with her, she’s very chill,” he’d told DT. “I enjoy Imran’s company,” Sonam says. “I don’t feel judged around him. There are very few people like that, who’re not concerned with who you are, where you come from, how you’re behaving... he’s like that.”

He did say, however, that he and IHLS director Punit Malhotra, who have a staple jeans-and-tee wardrobe, would keep ribbing her about appearing in all these “deadly numbers”. That makes Sonam laugh merrily. “Achha? Arre, Avantika (Imran’s fiancée) dresses quite cool too – I don’t know why he’s saying that! Avantika and I have similar tastes. Imran dresses pretty well too, his jeans and tees are cool, and he’s naturally good looking. He’s blessed that way; he has such a gorgeous face, he looks like James Dean. For IHLS, I told him that if you look better than I do, I’ll kill you!” she says, still chuckling.

Love and luv storys
Is she like her character in IHLS – super sugary romantic? “I’m not like Simi. I’m a true idealist, I’m a romantic, but I don’t like perfect things in my life,” says Sonam. “I’m not like any of the characters I’ve played, actually, except for maybe Aisha, to a certain degree. Her flaws are like mine. I’m like Simi only in my obsession with Hindi films.”

There’s no dearth of love stories about her – the link-ups, the latest one being with Punit. “I’m very, very, very much single,” she says patiently; obviously, the question’s been asked many times. “Punit and I are not seeing each other, we’re just friends, and the rumours are very awkward, weird and uncomfortable.” But is she looking for love? “I am looking for someone – I’m 25 yaar, I want to have fun.” And marriage – does she have an age and time in mind? “You can’t plan these things. How can girls be like that? ‘Main iss age mein shaadi karoongi, do saal mein mere bachche honge, mere do bachche honge’ – how boring! You have to go with the flow, work hard, enjoy yourself,” she says airily.

And does she think the industry is now fundamentally different from the time when stars could saunter in to the set hours late and play college kids despite carrying more than a few extra kilos? “See, my dad was the pioneer of coming on time and looking good. It’s the same with Amitabh Bachchan. The biggest stars I’ve worked with – Prem Chopra, Waheeda Rehman – they’re all very humble and very professional. There might have been a couple of actors who were like that, but the people I’ve known have been very professional. Anyone who’s not is not going to be successful. I don’t think dad has worked with anyone like that – and if they worked for him, he’d fire them! But yes, of course, you have to look good... and you can’t be fat!” she giggles.

Shammi to work with Ranbir in 'Rockstar'

Bollywood''s veteran actor Shammi Kapoor has said that he is upbeat to appear along with his 27-year-old grandson Ranbir Kapoor in Imtiaz Ali''s upcoming film ''Rockstar''.

Shammi Kapoor, who was the chief guest at the third convocation ceremony of Whistling Woods International, a film institute in Mumbai, said his falling health couldn''t impede his excitement to get back to work after 10 years.

"For me that is a great experience for the simple fact that I haven''t worked for 10 years or so now. I haven''t faced the camera not the professional ones and I am an ailing man, I undergo dialysis thrice a week," said Shammi Kapoor.

"I have been suffering to that extent and I am disabled, I am on wheelchair as you can see but to me it is a great feeling like a window opening, a possibility for me to go out there and do it all over again," he added.
Filmmakers Shekhar Kapoor and Subhash Ghai also attended the convocation ceremony along with Oscar winning lyrist Gulzar on Saturday.

Ghai promotes whistling Woods International, considered Asia''s largest Film, Television, Animation and Media Arts institute.

"I always thought that cinema has been going on in Mumbai for so long, studios have been built, but no such platform was built like you have a campus where you spend two years and you gain general knowledge on filmmaking, film appreciation, media studies," said Ghai.

"My main objective was to allow one to discover oneself," he added.

Internationally acclaimed Bollywood filmmaker Shekhar Kapoor, who has directed films like Elizabeth, Golden Age and Bandit Queen, said he has never been to the film institute.

"I been to film school and now I feel that if I get an opportunity then I would like to go to school. I have missed out on something, missed out on the theatrical and the ability to experiment with cinema," said Shekhar Kapoor. .

Singer Britney Spears has made it to the Forbes' list of highest-earning musicians which is led by U2.

The "Toxic" singer was named in the top five highest-earning musicians in the world after she was estimated to have made $63.90 million in last year.

Her return to the world stage follows a turbulent couple of years in her personal life during which she was hospitalised on several occasions and eventually placed under the conservatorship of her father.

In December 2008 her sixth album "Circus" was released and 3.5 million copies were sold worldwide. Meanwhile, her tour "The Circus" grossed more than $131.47 million, reports telegraph.

U2 that tops the list were the highest-earning musicians in the world after earning $129.80 million in 2009.

Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage had once taken hallucinogenic drug-laced magic mushrooms with his cat after the feline mistakenly ate a handful.

The Oscar-winner actor had stashed a bag of the psychedelic fungi in his fridge and was shocked when his pet Lewis pulled the door open and munched on the mushrooms, express reports.

So, Cage decided to join in and he and Lewis then spent hours staring at each other in his bedroom.

"I had a bag of mushrooms in my refrigerator. My cat used to sneak into the refrigerator and eat them. The cat ate them voraciously, so I thought what the heck, I better do it with him," said Cage.

"I remember lying on my bed for hours and Lewis was on the desk across my bed and we just stared at each other for hours, not moving, just staring at each other, and I had no doubt that he was my brother," he added.

Auto rickshaw wallahs know everything. So, what if the clock’s palms show seven in the morning, when Pune airport is a couple of hours away from getting congested? Several rickshaw guys have assembled near a fleet of cars, and one of them asks this writer: Akshay Kumar kab aa rahein hain?

Mentioning a specific time means inviting a 100 more star gazers. Hence, the reply, “Pata nahi.” That’s safe.

It doesn’t take long before Akshay steps out of the airport and into the centre of a small crowd that has assembled for a peek and a cell snap. He walks towards the car — second in the line of seven — and sits inside. Six odd cars before and after him take off for the hotel. It’s time for a chat.

Akshay’s latest onscreen avatar of Sachin Tichkule in Priyadarshan’s Khatta Meetha has been making a lot of news lately. Where did Tichkule’s name originate? Dressed in a striped shirt and a pair of jeans, he smiles a bit, “I came up with the name, although the character was conceived by Priyadarshan. In Bandra East in Mumbai, I used to have a neighbour by that name. In fact, the heroine’s surname Ganpule is also my brainchild.” He stops a while and adds, “Marathi names are so interesting and nice. So, it was great to have a typical Maharashtrian name instead of the Ajays, Amars and Vijays.”

In the process of getting into the skin of Tichkule, a road contractor, Akshay had done some research. He reflects, “The money that is being generated through taxes should be used to build proper roads. Till sometime back, only three km of highway roads were constructed every day. Now, 22 km are built every day. That’s an improvement, but we need to do much better.”

Akshay is a Priyan favourite, having done several films with the director before the forthcoming release. What is that exceptional quality about Priyan which attracts him such? “The experience has been great,” he says, adding, “He is a sheer genius. Just think of it. He has made 72 films out of which 65 are hits. Only someone who is an absolute genius can have such a track record.”

Having started out as an action star, Akshay has been concentrating on comedies barring a few exceptions like 8 x 10 Tasveer and Blue. Why is it so? “A man has to realise what people want,” says he, adding, “If you make a list of films that have been hits in recent times, you will see that 90 per cent of them are comedies. There is too much negativity around us — wars, murders, and so on. So, when a person goes to watch a film, he wants to enjoy. Nothing else.”

After telling him that the next one is a ‘tired question’, this writer asks, “Any plans to get into direction?” He laughs, “No, it is not a tired question at all. Four years back, if you had asked me whether or not I would be producing films, I would have said ‘no way.’ But the fact is that I have produced a few films since then. See, the thing is, I might tell you ‘no way’ about direction right now. But you never know.” Is there a hint somewhere? We refuse to play Nostradamus!

With films like Action Replayy and Tees Maar Khan in the pipeline — in the latter, he plays a conman – Akshay is one really busy star. “Next year, I will be working in one of the biggest films ever,” he says, without divulging much because the film is at ‘the scripting level’.

As the interview nears its end, the cars come to a halt in front of the hotel where he is staying. “See you soon,” he says, while getting out of the car. While we shake hands, one thinks: See you soon. At the movies.

Bollywood hunk recently found himself in a tricky situation when he was sandwiched between ex-flames Katrina Kaif and Aishwarya Bachchan. It so happened that all the three stars were at the same venue for their work at the same time. Eyewitnesses say that the situation became a little embarrassing for all three of them and all of them avoided eye contact.
The incident happened when Aishwarya was shooting for the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed movie Guzaarish and Katrina Kaif who is rumoured to have recently broken up with Salman was shooting for an Ad. Salman too landed up at the venue for some interviews not knwing the presence of Ash and Kat. Within a few moments Salman realized that his vanity van was sandwiched between his ex-lovers.

Delhi girl Bipasha Basu returned to her roots to bring in her birthday on January 7. “This was my first birthday in Delhi. I’ve very special links with that city. I was born in Delhi. So when I got a chance to be in the Capital for my birthday I grabbed it. To make it even better it was seriously cold in Delhi. I love the winter weather.”

Bipasha’s soul-mate and hopefully her lifelong companion John Abraham accompanied her to Delhi. “It was the Auto Expo and as you know John loves anything on wheels, but hates birthdays. So he was just happy being around some of the best cars in the world.” The couple flew back to Mumbai in time for Bipasha’s family birthday lunch. “It’s an annual ritual on my birthday, and one I won’t miss for the world. This time one of my sisters was not here for my birthday. She’s studying. We really missed her. But my parents and my other sister, brother-in-law and nephew were home for my birthday.”

John was not invited to the family lunch. As far as birthdays go there’s a serious problem between Bipasha and John. While John hates birthdays and all the accompanying rituals, Bipasha loves every bit of the attention on her birthday. Hence, while John went into hiding on his birthday last month (Decemeber 17) Bipasha basked in all the attention.

“John runs the other way when it comes to cutting cakes. I spent my whole birthday cutting cakes with different groups of family members and friends. I couldn’t take all the calls and smses. But I answered all of them on the day after my birthday. When I returned from Delhi my house was filled with flowers. You’ve no idea how wonderful flowers look in a newly-renovated house. My home was fragrant and attractive. My two sweet maidservants had arranged all the bouquets all over the house.”

Bipasha is hoping for a productive year. “There isn’t much work happening. The scripts floating around are mostly mediocre. I can’t bring myself to do sub-standard work. Hopefully I’ll sign something exciting soon. But I’m certainly not sitting at home. I’m constantly on my toes doing one thing or another, too busy to twiddle my thumbs.”

Salman slams Zarine Khan hype

Bollywood star Salman Khan has slammed the hype over the reported similarities between his Veer co-star Zarine and actress Katrina Kaif. Salman said that if there was any similarities between the two stars he would have been the first notice it. 'Sucking Arshad's thumb was sexy'

Vidya Balan who never touches alcohol has shot a special risqué number entitled Ibn batuta in Ishqiya with her co-stars Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi.

Says Vidya, “We shot the song last month after the entire shooting was completed. I don’t drink and I had to act sozzled along with Naseer Saab and Arshad.”

The track will be used in the opening and credit titles of Ishqiya.

Says Vidya, “Arshad is a fab dancer. And Naseer Saab was having a ball dancing to the song Vishal Bhardwaj had composed. I think the last time he danced was for Oye oye in Tridev. But you can’t tell. He’s so good. Both the guys were having so much fun, and I had to join in pretending to be totally drunk.”

The song came out so well that the director Abhishek Choubey was thinking of using it in the narrative. But since it didn’t fit in, Ibn batuta will now just be part of the credit titles.

That isn’t the only daredevil thing Vidya has done in Ishqiya. This has to qualify as one of the most sensuous things a mainstream Hindi-film heroine is seen doing in any movie.

In what Vidya Balan describes as the most blatant come-hither gesture she has ever seen any actress in Hindi cinema make, in Ishqiya she was required to take Arshad Warsi’s thumb in her mouth and suck on it suggestively.

Each time she did so in the rehearsals Vidya would burst into uncontrollable giggles.And Arshad would join in.

Recalls Vidya, “Fortunately Arshad is a friend. We’ve gotten along well from the time we did Lage Raho Munnabhai together. I don’t know I’d have been able to do a scene like putting my co-star’s finger in the mouth with someone else. That gesture of sucking Arshad’s thumb was so raunchy and sexy, so not me, I couldn’t connect with it all.”

That sense of non-connectivity, says Vidya, runs through her character in Ishqiya. “I play this rustic voluptuous woman. All my weight-loss happened after I did this film. I had to looked filled up for this part.

In Ishqiya everything from the way I wore my saree to the way I looked at men, was alien to me. The role exposed me to a new way of interpreting a liberated woman. My character in Ishqiya may not know about feminism. But she’s truly liberated.”

Vidya is now looking forward to the release of Ishqiya in January. “The director Abhishek Choubey had to constantly keep giving me a pep talk. Quite often I was stuck because of the language and content.

Confirming the news, Deepika said, “This must be the first film in the history of cinema where a leading lady is being talked about so much for not being in the film. No, I’m not annoyed by these never-ending references to Kareena. When people see the film I know they’ll come out talking about me and my performance. Director Imtiaz Ali was very sure he wanted only me in the film.”

To elaborate her point further, Deepika lets out a secret, “Imtiaz was so sure that he wanted me for the part that he had offered me Love Aaj Kal even before my first film, Om Shanti Om, was released. Even before seeing me on screen, he knew that I was right for the role. So there was no question of any other actress being in the film.”
